Description:

This magnificent work was painted by the outstanding Fedoskino artist Pavel Anokhin. It is painted in the style which is unusual for Fedoskino School of miniature painting. To a great extent it is close to the style of surrealism. In painting and sculpture surrealism is one of the leading influences of the 20th century. In this century it also admired, and included in its exhibitions, works by the Italian Giorgio de Chirico, the Russian Marc Chagall, the Swiss Paul Klee, the French artists Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia, and the Spaniard Pablo Picasso. Surrealist painting exhibits great variety of content and technique. That of Salvador Dali, for example, consists of more or less a direct and photographic transcription of dreams. And that is why his style most of the time is easy to recognize!
The composition of the box shows a game of Chess, but this is not traditional realistic painting. Here we can see large figures of human playing (or manipulating) with chess pieces on the Board . On the foreground we can see man and woman, who stand back to each other and like hiding the combinations on their boards.
In the background the artist also has painted several human figures and chess pieces, but they are not involved in the game, mostly entertained or even dancing.
Another words, the title of the composition "The Royal Chess" can be enterpretended as Royal families and politics are playing with another people as with puppets.
The composition is painted in white and blue tones.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. White creamy lacquer covers the exterior and light creamy brown lacquer covers the interior of the box. The intricate and complex gold line decoration is framing the composition. The box has a hinge to its top and rests on four legs, which are finished with metal nails. It is signed and titled ("The Royal Chess") by the artist.
