Description:

This colorful box was painted by a well-known artist, Boris Shavirin from the village of Fedoskino.
The box shows Market place in the 18th century in Russia. This theme is traditional for Russian lacquer miniature art and very popular among modern artists. On the front, we can see a father with two kids at Yarmarka. They wear rich clothes, sewed with gold. Father is lending his hand to a lady behind the counter, to get a plate full of pancakes. A son already has one pancake in his hands, a girl has a sugar candy in a shape of cockerel. Around them market people are trading, bargaining, selling all the goods. A lady at the counter has a Samovar, so she is offereing Tea from Samovar, cakes , pancakes and different stuffing for the pancakes!
The palette incorporates gray, yellow and white oils as the action takes place in winter, with addition of gold paints. The artist demonstrates his unsurpassed skill while painting the charackter's festive attires. The effect of festivity is strengthened by the pieces of mother-of-pear inlaid into the costumes of the characters (lady at the counter and a little girl); it shimmers beautifully with bright green and blue tints. One more piece of mother-of-pearl is shines through the walls of the Church at the right upper corner of the scene.
Rich gold line frames the composition. The box's sides imitates the color of brown marble; the bottom is black, while the interior of the box is traditionally red.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The box has a hinge to the left from the scene and rests on a flat surface. It is signed with the artist's name, the village of Fedoskino and the year (2020).
Nice piece of Fedoskino Art!!!
