Description:

This dramatic example of ingenious Russian craftsmanship was created by the talented Yuriy Dubovikov from the village of Fedoskino. It is a classic combination of style, experience and skill. The composition shows the coming of the evening in a small village. It is getting dark. The whole horizon glows with the golden light of the setting sun. The ripple surface of the river and white snow reflect the golden sunlight, and lighten up the dark scene featuring the end of a day. To enhance radiance of the sky and the river, the artist uses mother-of-pearl and aluminum powder. Trees in the background are also painted with the use of aluminum powder that helps to create an optical illusion of trees covered with white snow. Gold dust seems to have been sprinkled in certain parts of the composition to add an almost unnoticeable sparkle to the piece. The colors taken from the palette are very natural and realistic. The snow looks very soft, as if it were untouched all winter. The lack of detail in the snow enhances the beauty in the stream. Several houses in the background, small figures of people and animals build depth for the scene. When this piece is turned in the palm of the hand the color variances and the detail are thoroughly enjoyable.
The sides of the box are adorned with rich and elegant gold patterns. The box is constructed out of heavy and dense paper-mache. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer and the interior is painted with red lacquer. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and the box rests on four rounded legs. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (2003).
