Description:

This beautiful box showing a peasant girl riding a donkey was painted by Fedoskino artist L. Rogatova. The depicted landscape reminds some picturesque locality in Italy. The clear blue sky, the mountains, the smooth surface of the sea, the bright sunlight and dense vegetation shine with the exotic beauty of the South. We may suppose that the girl wends her way to a church, because she holds a bible and beads in her hands and, also, there is the cross cut out on the mighty trunk of the tree. The girl's beautiful face is very well drawn. A pleasant smile upon her face, her big blue eyes, the delicacy of her skin, blue and yellow flowers in her hair may fascinate anyone. She is dressed in well-detailed peasant costume. Her white apron is trimmed with fluffy lace, her dress is decorated with blue ribbons, her bright red shawl is detailed with tiny tassels. All these skillfully painted diminutive details show the artist's indisputable talent of a miniature-painter. The little donkey is painted quite naturally; the texture of its hair is reproduced impeccably. It looks so touchingly! The human figures in the background are painted vaguely; it is a trick, which artists use to create depth through perspectives. The surrounding landscape is amazing, and it, really, looks like in reality.
Aluminum powder is used to enhance the color of the girl's costume. There is a professionally painted gold ornament on the sides of the box. The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge has been fastened to the left of the composition to be used for ease of opening. The box comes to rest on four rounded feet carved from the base of the work. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (1998).
