This attractive box was painted by Fedoskino artist T. Pereotieva. The composition shows the every-day scene from village life. A peddler has brought his goods in a small village. He demonstrates a pair of stylish red boots to the girls who may see such fashionable footwear for the first time in their life. Before the revolution peasant women wore such boots very seldom, lapti (bast shoes) and valenki (winter footwear) were more common among peasants. You can make sure of this fact, looking at the girls' feet. They wear lapti, whereas the peddler, who lives in a town, wears boots. That is why the girls looks at the boots with such astonishment and admiration.
Owing to bright and mellow color palette the composition looks festive and expressive. Bright red, green, and brownish tones stand out the depth of the black background. Pieces of gold metallic leaf and aluminum powder are used to highlight and detail the clothes of the characters, the boots and the apples. These materials make the box look appealing and help to attract the viewer's attention.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the left of the composition. The box rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the name of the artist, village and year (1995). A fine traditional work!
