Dunaev from the village of Fedoskino painted this winter landscape. It's a dull day, and the pale sun peeps out of dense grey clouds. The ground is covered with a blanket of white snow. It is common weather for cold Russian winter when nobody wants to leave his cozy warm home.
The scene is painted in various shades of blue with minor additions of browns. The small village painted in the background creates the depth of the composition. Mother-of-pearl produces brilliance of the winter sun.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed and dated (2006) by Dunaev.
