Description:

This lovely scene, showing some ships sailing out to sea, was created by Dunaev from the village of Fedoskino. He is a brilliant landscape painter, who becomes skilled hand at painting seascapes. Versatility of his genres is the evidence of his outstanding talent.
Here Dunaev achieves some very good textures. The water, particularly in the foreground right in front of the ship, looks strikingly realistic. The clouds look light and fluffy, while the stone tower and hills in the distance have a harder texture. The light falling across the sails is quite well-done, adding a sense of drama to the scene. Dunaev does a nice job with the highlights and shadows on the boat; even the fine rigging lines have highlights, adding an almost photographic realism to this part of the work. The forms in the distance are naturally less detailed, creating a sense of depth and conveying the effect of humidity in the atmosphere. The scene is quite calm and peaceful. The drama in the work comes not from violent waves or a raging storm, but from the light falling across the ships and water. The artist adds a striking piece of mother-of-pearl in the sky to simulate the effect of sunlight illuminating the clouds. This shell has greenish and pink undertones that suit the rich, warm palette nicely.
The scene is framed with gold beads.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged at the top, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed and dated (2006) by Dunaev.
