Description:

This charming small box is a creation of Novoseltseva from the village of Fedoskino. It depicts the boy lying on the stove, and playing with the kitten. The interior of the peasant's house is skillfully drawn with a lot of details. It gives a possibility to acquaint oneself with a family life of Russian village. The stove is paved with tiles; each tile features a definite geometrical image. Inside the stove there is a cooking pot; peasant food cooked inside the stove is very delicious and good for health. A stove in a Russian village is the center of the house; it is used for generating warmth, for cooking, and also, as it is shown here, Russian peasants like to lie on the stove. From the right of the stove there are two barrels filled with water, and the kettle hung on the wall; they are used as simple appliances for washing. The blanket the boy lies on is made out of multicolored rags. Onions and healing herbs are hung on the walls.
Various shades of brown dominate here as the action takes place inside the wooden peasant house. Gold metal leaf shines through the boy's shirt, the blanket, the kettle and small doors on the stove. Mother-of-pearl is set into the window, the boy's trousers, and the blanket.
The box's black lacquered exterior is sprayed with brown paint; this brown area is studded with thin black veins. The box's exterior is also decorated with almost invisible gold dust; the interior is traditionally red.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed by the artist.
