Description:

Vatalina from the village of Fedoskino painted this attractive box. It features the wedding celebration in a Russian village. Friends, relatives and neighbors of the newly-weds have gathered in the izba (or a "peasant house") to congratulate them on this happy occasion.
This box isn't big, but here Vatalina could find place to paint sixteen human figures. Each of them has the individual face with extreme life-like detail and expression. Here the artist also demonstrates her fertile fantasy while painting the costumes of the characters, - none of them is repeated. The interior of the peasant house where the action takes place is drawn with a lot of details that familiarize the viewer with a family life of Russian peasants. Here we can see the stove that is the center of a Russian peasant house, the barrel filled with water, used as a simple appliance for washing, and icons on the wooden walls.
Various shades of brown dominate here as the action takes place inside the wooden peasant house. Gold metal leaf shines through the icons and the costumes of some character. Gold dust seems to have been sprinkled in certain parts of the scene to add an almost unnoticeable sparkle. The scene looks dramatically as here the artist masterfully created the illusion of a room illuminated by a faint candle light.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene and the box rests on four legs. Signed with the name of the artist, Fedoskino, and the year of 2006.
