Irina Kosheleva is the talented Fedoskino artist responsible for this adorable piece of Russian lacquer artistry. Here the artist has painted a kitten playing with a ball. Working on this scene the artist has managed to catch the kitten's playful mood, and express it by means of different artistic approaches. As typical of Fedoskino realism, the fur of the kitten and the expression upon its face are exceptionally executed. The artist did an excellent job in fading the reds, browns, dark greys and whites in and out of one another. Gold metal powder is mixed with the oils to produce a sparkle of the background.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while dark red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition to be used for ease of opening, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The lid's artistry is framed with a thin line of gold paint; the box's sides are decorated with one more gold line. The work is signed with the artist's name.
