Description:

This tranquil landscape scene was painted by one of the Fedoskino masters of this genre, Mikhail Kornienko. It's the early morning. Everything is peaceful and quiet and you have a sense that it is dawn, the day just beginning. The scene is dominated by a large tree that overlooks a river. Just under the tree there is the small figure of a horseman who is watering his horse. All of the land is in harmony and lives and breathes in the same breath, with the horse, the man, trees and birds all being connected with the rise of the morning sun.
The palette used is very light and soft, which seems to take the strain out of the eye when viewing the piece. Various tones of greens, browns and grays make up the landscape, while subdued greenish yellow colors are used to paint the sky and the river.
The box was done in 1981 in the waning days of the USSR and is in fine shape. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece and red lacquer to paint the interior. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the name of the artist, village and year (1981).
