This interesting piece is a creation of the famous Fedoskino artist, Vladislav Maslov. The work is called “Water Spirit”, and shows a strange creature that lives in lakes and rivers. In ancient times people believed that any lake, river and even a pond is inhabited by water spirits and mermaids.
The scene is painted in different shades of blue oils to create an aquatic atmosphere. Gold and aluminum powders are used to highlight the water plants. Sparkling blue spangles create brilliance of the dragonfly's wings depicted from the right of the Water-Spirit's face.
The box is richly decorated. A wide band inlaid with shinning mother-of-pearl pieces wrap around the box's sides. This band is framed with very thin gold lines. The box's exterior is covered with blue paint mixed with gold dust. On the box's exterior bottom the artist has painted a whimsical pattern composed of gold veins.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on four small pearl beads. The interior of the box is covered with dark red lacquer mixed with gold dust. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the year of 2009 and the title at the bottom of the composition.
