Yugeniy Dokuchaev is the author of this masterfully painted portrait of the guitarist. Dokuchaev is one of the most famous Fedoskino portrait painters who likes to depict on his boxes the portraits painted by great Russian artists. This portrait is Dokuchaev's interpretation of the word famous canvas-on-oil painting originally painted in 1823 by the outstanding Russian artist, Vasily Tropinin. Called “Guitarist”, this masterpiece is exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
Vasily Andreevich Tropinin (1780 - 1857) was a Russian Romantic painter. Much of his life was spent as a serf; he didn't attain his freedom until he was more than forty years old. Three of his more important works are a portrait of Alexander Pushkin and paintings called “The Lace Maker “and “The Gold-Embroideress”.
The portrait is framed with a gold line; two parallel gold lines decorate the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the portrait, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name.
