Description:

This box was painted by Fedoskino artist Basina. The box shows a scene from the popular Russian fairy-tale "The Snow Maiden", or, "Snegurochka" in Russian. The composition is very romantic and peaceful. The lad named Lel is playing his flute and young ladies, including the Snow Maiden, are listening to the music. The ladies are enchanted by the wonderful tune that arouses in their hearts some pleasant sensation. They want to love and to be loved.
There is a good feel of ancient Russian tradition in the scene. The characters are dressed in traditional Russian costumes. The ladies are dressed in sarafans decorated with gold embroidery, bright ribbons are plaited into their braids; Lel has ancient Russian shoes "lapti" (bast shoes) on his feet. The mood of the composition is peaceful and relaxing and the characters are given a very gentle and tender treatment. They fit perfectly into the idyllic forest, full of flowers, shrubbery and trees.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with nice gold ornaments. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the name of the artist.
