This small, but interesting composition was painted by a talented artist Svetlana Komogorova. It shows a sister Aleonushka with her young brother Ivanushka in the Kingdom of Baba Yaga.
Baba-Yaga is the oldest character of the Slavonic mythology. Originally Baba-Yaga was the goddess of death; people imagined her as a woman with the snake tail who guarded the entrance into the other world and accompanied the souls of dead people into the Kingdom of the Dead.
Baba Yaga is the most famous figure in Russian fairy tales that represents evil. It is a character of such fairy-tales as "Marya Morevna", "Princess Frog", "The Tale of Life Water and Youth Giving Appels", and many, many others. Baba-Yaga depicted here is a main character of the Russian folk fairy-tale "Geese and Swans". In this tale Baba-Yaga's servants, Geese and Swans, kidnap a little boy, Ivanushka and sister Aleonushka, who suppose to watch for a brother, has to help him out.
The scene is drawn in dark tones as the action takes place in the evening and surround the trees. Baba-Yaga is shown in the skies over her magic hut on chicken legs.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. A hinge is fastened to the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom.The box is signed by the artist.
