Artist Mashkova from the village of Fedoskino is fond of birds, and has created a series of works painted on this theme. Here she has depicted a couple of Motley Crickets sitting on the branches of a tree. The noble scarlet and gray feathering of the depicted bird contrast beautifully with the delicate light blue background. Aluminum powder shines in the middle of the scene to focus the viewer's attention on the depicted birds!
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The edges of the lid and the sides of the box are decorated with a simple gold pattern. The work is signed with the artist's name, name of the bird "Motley cricket" and the year of 2013.
