Description:

This composition is an excelent example of Fedoskino artistry. Olga Zayakina is the talented artist who has been painted it.
The imagery comes from, "The Tale of the Princess Frog." The arrow landed next to its unintended target. In the quest for a bride, Ivan Tsarevich fired his arrow at random in the hopes of securing beauty and love along with his two older brothers. He did not count on adventure. The frog finding has just transformed into anything, but a slippery amphibian. Ivan will realize the true nature of his find soon enough.
This composition is based on a box originally painted by Fedoskino master Gennady Larishev, which is shown in images 121 and 122 in Nikolai Malakhov's book Fedoskino. Another rendition is on page 41 of Lucy Maxim's book Russian Lacquer Legends and Fairy-Tales.
The clothing worn by the character is definitely one of the highlights of the piece. A lots of gold can be found here! The threes with the gold leaves acting as the background for the character, builds beauty in the palette in large doses.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the piece. The scene is framed with a floral golden ornament; more complex golden floral ornamentation wraps around the box's sides.
The box has a hinge to the left of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The artist wrote Fedoskino, 2019, and his name below the composition.
The box can go as a pair with another box of the same size, with Ivan on it. Number #009046, please contact us if you will be interested.
