The scene is painted in bright oils. Several pieces of mother-of-pearl are set into the warm coats of the ladies to fill it with light and a subtle yellow, pink and green shimmer. Brilliant gold and silver paints are used to detail the characters' costumes.
The sides of the box are decorated with the rich gold floral pattern. It is made by a carving over the sheets of real gold clued to the surface of the sides.
The box's interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer, the exterior is black.
The box is made of paper-mache. It has a hinge from the top of the scene, and rests on a wavy platfor with eight legs. The box signed with the name of the artist,Fedoskino and the title at the bottom of the composition.
