Description:

This box has been painted by Mstera artist A. Medvedeva. It depicts a scene from the Russian folk fairy-tale "Sadko". The tale tells about the exciting adventures of a musician Sadko. Once during one of his voyages, he had to throw himself into the sea to appease the Sea Tsar. He came to the Sea Tsar's court, and played his gusli (a musical instrument), while the Sea Tsar danced, causing a great disturbance in the sea. As a result of it, ships were sinking, people were dying. Having realized it, Sadko stopped playing. This episode is depicted here.
To reproduce the atmosphere of underwater kingdom the artist uses the palette filled with different shades of blue paint. The composition is complex and includes various details: thoroughly painted human figures, architecture, ships and many sea animals. Creativity and tradition are abundant. The composition is framed with a silver line and then decorated with the original pattern painted in gold and aluminum. The same gold and aluminum pattern wraps around the sides of the box. For additional decoration the artist covers the exterior of the box (except the base), which is unusually covered with black lacquer with the sports of blue paint creating the pattern that resembles surface of a stone.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on a flat bottom. On the bottom of the box the artist paints in aluminum the title of the piece, "Sadko", the village of Mstera, and her original signature.
