Pavel Golovanov of Mstera is the artist who painted this scene. His style is very unique and his palette is usually filled with pastels and soft tones. Golovanov likes to use comic themes and this box is not exception. The drunk poet reads his ode "Poetic licence" to his friend, musician, who is also drunk. Behind them there is the table with empty bottles of wine and vodka scattered on it. The poet's wife depicted in the left part of the composition is going to punish her husband for his drunkenness and indecent behavior. She holds a heavy pan in her hands and intends to beat the drunkards.
Pavel Golovanov is definitely taking his art, and Mstera's, into a new direction. His style sets him very far apart from his peers with its surreal approach to the icon painting origins of lacquer art. It is no wonder that experts are calling Golovanov the next great Mstera artist. His creative power to paint highly original and captivating scenes is incredible. Gold paint is used to detail the scene, but is used in subtle, appropriate amounts.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. The scene is framed with a silver line. The edges of the lid and the box's sides are decorated with gold and aluminum ornamentation. The box is hinged from the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the artist's name, village and title (the ode "Poetic licence").
