Painted by the outstanding Mstera artist Pyotr Sosin, this unique in shape and style box depicts the traditional scene of a Russian troika. The Troika scenes in lacquer art are painted to express the excitement and fun that can be had in a speeding troika. This scene isn't exception. Three mighty steeds driven by a restless coachman rush along the field covered with white snow. They pull the sledge where sits a young lady dressed in warm clothes. They pass by a small village painted by the artist to create a perspective view. In spite of the season, the sun shines brightly lightening everything around. The troika is painted in traditional, colorful tones whereas the surrounding landscape is painted in blue and white tones suitable for the depiction of a winter scene.
To the left and to the right from the scene the artist paints beautiful patterns featuring flowers and snowflakes. To paint them he uses gold and yellow oils. The scene is framed with a gold line. The edges of the lid are decorated with tiny beads painted aluminum. The sides of the box are adorned with elegant patterns painted in gold and aluminum.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a lively red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed by the artist.
