Description:

In a style of painting that is purely her own, Antonina Medvedeva has used her blend of cool colors to create a fabulous rendition of Pushkin's classic fairy tale poem "Ruslan and Ludmila".
Using the iconographic method of artistic application, the artist has produced several of the most memorable moments from the tale. This method of painting allows for more than one element of time and space to exist together upon the same surface. In the upper left corner of the composition, the artist depicts the moment of the story when Ruslan accompanied by his rivals: Rogdai, Ratmir and Farlaf, sets out in search of Lyudmila kidnapped by the wicked wizard Chernomor. In the right bottom corner there is the sorceress who tempted Ruslan and his rivals. The central composition depicts Ruslan and his beloved Lyudmila together on their long journey home while two other warriors know that an interruption here would not be worth their effort. In the left upper corner there is a scene showing the wedding of Ruslan and Luydmila.
Green, yellowish-brown and reds are the main tones to paint this composition. The landscape is exquisitely done so as not to disturb the emphasis she leaves on the characters and the events, but the landscape does a great deal in setting the tranquil mood for the eye.
The edges of the lid are decorated with elaborate gold and aluminum patterns painted against the green background, while the sides of the box are adorned with a string of gold foliage.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Mstera. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a radiant red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on a small platform. The work is signed and titled by the artist.
