Description:

This traditional Mstera box was painted by Peter Sosin. It depicts the final scene from the Pushkin's fairy-tale "Golden Cockerel". Tsar Dadon is punished for his lust and foolishness. Instead of mourning for his killed sons he started romancing the Shemakha Queen. He also wasn't managed to keep his promise to give the astrologer everything that he wants for possession of the magic golden cockerel. When he refused to endow the astrologer with the Shemakha Queen, the golden cockerel pecked him to death.
Piotr Sosin uses a palette of paint that shows a great variety in tones. Sosin's personal style brings great outlines to the figures in the scene. There is a sense of strict geometry he follows in this painting, which he provides by configuring everything to be well-balanced. He uses gold paint, with great subtlety to accent many areas of the composition.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache made in the village of Kholuy. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold ornamentation frames the composition and wraps around the sides of the box. The lid is hinged, and the box sits flat. The artist has written Mstera, the title, and his name at the bottom of the composition on the lid.
