Description:

This small box was painted by Galkina M. from the village of Palekh. It shows a girl sitting on a branch of the big tree and feeding squirrels. The tree is very big and in the middle of it there is the dark hollow. It is the house of squirrels. Some of these charming small animals are not afraid of the girl. They approach her and eat tasty nuts from her palms. The others hide in the hollow or jump nearby.
The scene is painted in different colors over a gold metal leaf. Owing to it the scene is very expressive and decorative. Gold foil background also gives the composition three dimensional features. Gold paint is used to detail the tree and the girl's hair.
The box is constructed from orgaleet. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a lively red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The edges of the lid are framed with a string of golden beads. The sides of the box are decorated with complex floral gold patterns. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed, dated (2005) and titled ("Squirrels") by the artist.
