Description:

This box painted by Natalya Kornilova shows a scene from the well-known Russian fairy-tale "Father Frost" (or "Morozko").In the foreground she has painted Morozko who rewards the girl with rich presents while in the background we can see the old man who returns home with his daughter. He was ashamed of leaving his dear daughter in the cold winter forest by the order of his second wife. It was a great wonder for him to find his daughter alive and endowed with presents.
The scene is painted in the traditional Palekh style using light blue and brown tempera paints. The decorative element of the piece adds to the aesthetic quality of the moment. Gold and silver contours fill the work with a festive sparkle.
A gold beaded filigree decorates the edge of the lid. Lively golden filigree wraps around the sides of the box with aluminum wild flowers as accents.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh and the title ("Morozko").
