Description:

This very large box was painted by the talented Palekh artists family-the Terentievs Sergey and Olga. It shows several scenes from the popular Russian fairy-tale "By the Pike's Will" or "Emelya and the magic Pike".
At the left top part of the composition Emelya is catching the magic Pike by a buckle, then buckles will go by themselves (by the Pike's will) home with water. At the right top part we can see horseless sledge that are moving (by the pike's will). And on the central part the stove is rushing without horses and bringing Emelya to the Tsar's Palace.
The work is a good example of intricate Palekh art. Bright white and gray tones are dominated here and showing us a beauty of winter time. Hair thin gold and silver accents have been used extensively throughout the composition adding rich luminescence and delicacy to the piece.
The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold leafy patterns.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged to the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The composition is signed with the artists initials and surname, and the village of Palekh in gold paint.
