Description:

This box was painted by a talented Palekh artist, Tatiana Kamanina. The work is called "Lukomorye" that can be translated into English as "By the Ocean".
In the Russian folklore "Lukomorye" is also known as the fairy land inhabited by various fairy-tale characters (here we can remember Pushkin's introduction to the popular poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila" that begins with the following words:
"An oak tree greening by the ocean;
A golden chain about it wound..."
The composition shows the characters from different Russian fairy-tales that live in Lukomorye.
In the center of the composition we can see the Green oak and the Learned Cat from Pushkin's introduction to "Ruslan and Lyudmila". Mermaid is sit in the bushes of this Green Oak tree.
On the left side we can see 33 Champions , who are coming out of the Ocean guided with Uncle Chernomor.
In the left upper corner we can see Elena the Beautiful and the Gray Wolf, the small Fire-bird sit in the bushes of the Oak tree near by.
In the left upper corner we can find Ruslan flying with the wizzard, in the right upper corner there is Baba Yaga in mortal over her house on the chicken legs.Below Baba Yaga Koshey the Deathless, and under Koshey Ivan Tsarevich and Tsar Saltan are talking in front of the Palace.
The artist fills the composition with lots of action and detail. Each charcter is enhanced with gold metallic paint that adds a rich brightness to the work. The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold patterns on the box's sides.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four legs. On the lid's interior the artists painted in gold the intricate ornament inside which name, the title, the village name of Palekh, the year of 2019.
