Description:

This elegantly shaped box that depicts rather an unusual composition is an original artwork of the talented Palekh artist Ekaterina Bykova.
Ekaterina is a very creative artist who tries like many young modern lacquer miniature painters to widen the boundaries of Russian traditional schools of lacquer miniature art. By painting this original composition performed in the style that is rather unusual for Palekh school, Ekaterina has made another step in modernizing stable traditions in lacquer miniature art.
Here the artist has chosen to depict a Circus performance! The painting is MADE over the real gold. It was glued as a sheet on the surface of the box and later on the painting was made over it.
On the top we can see a dancing pair plus musicians.
On the front side- funambulist with the audience.
On the left side we can the Musicians from the town of Bremen.
On the back side we can see the clowns and animal trainers.
On the right hand side we can see a huge elephant with a monkey on it.
The composition is framed with originally painted gold patterns.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box has hinges from the sides of the casket and rests on four legs.
The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Palekh.
