Title: Tale of a little hump-backed Horse
Artist: Shemarov Alexander
Size: 18.5x7.5x4
Size (inches): 7.25x3x1.5
Price: $395 $275

Well-known Palekh artist Shemarov Alexander has painted this composition that features a scene from a tale of a Hump-backed Horse written by Russian poet Peter Ershov. The box of this shape can be use as a glass-holder!
In the beginning of the story, when one of three sons- Ivan caught the magic mare that trampled down wheat on his father's field. This mare promised Ivan to present three foals in exchange for freedom. Later two of these foals turned into the steeds with golden manes while the third one turned into the Humpbacked Little Pony(this moment you can see on this box). The old greedy Tsar obliged Ivan to fulfill different tasks, and the Humpbacked Little Pony always helped him. And in the end of a story instead of the tsar Ivan dipped himself in three cauldrons of boiling water, boiling milk and ice cold water, and transformed into a very handsome young man and the Tsar only boiled in the first one...
Subdued tones of tempera paints predominate here. Gold and aluminum paint is applied within the composition to add brightness and detail. The application of metallic paint is very subtle yet yields great results. The edges of the lid are decorated with simple patterns composed of gold beads. The box's sides are adorned with an elegant leafy golden pattern completed with silver flowers.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box has a hinge from the top of the scene, and rests flat. The work is signed with the artist's name, 2013 and the village of Palekh.
