This unique piece of superior Russian artistry was composed by the talented Marina Rogatova of Fedoskino. Rogatova's expression of originality is a key element in all of her work, this piece is no exception. Simply put, the piece stands out. The small oval box shows several bees hovering over wild flowers. Rogatova has already created a series of works on this theme. The scene drawn on the box's lid is extended on its sides. To strengthen the colors the artist has used aluminum powders as an underlayer for the oils. Pieces of mother-of-pearl that shine with pink and green undertones are set into some of the flowers. Gold paint is used to detail the bees.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. The exterior of the piece is painted with a creamy white lacquer while the interior is painted with a deep red lacquer. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the year of 2008 on the lid's interior.
