This beautiful Kholui box has been created by Anatoliy Zhukov. It features the characters from the popular fairy-tale "The Snowmaiden". In the center of the composition there is the Snowmaiden. Behind her back we can see, her parents, Father Frost and Faire Spring. From the left of her the artist depicted the peasant who sheltered her in his house and became her second father. From the right of her we can see Lel and a group of girls and lads. Besides the human figures (nine in number), the composition includes intricately painted animals: a deer, a hare and a squirrel; the detailed architecture; and the beautiful winter landscape.
Blue and white tones are used to paint the landscape, whereas the characters are painted in warm yellow-brownish tones. Gold paint is used to outline and highlight areas of emphasis in the scene. This is done with subtlety and an eye for artistic integrity.
Beautiful gold ornamentation frames the scene, and decorates the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top, and the box rests on four legs. The artist has signed his name, the title and the village name of Kholuy along the bottom of the composition in gold paint. On the exterior bottom you can find the Kholui "firebird" insignia stamped in gold paint.
