Description:

Marina Velichko has drawn this interesting box that shows Baba-Yaga riding her mortar. At the bottom of the composition the artist has written in gold the following inscription: “A terrible noise was heard in the forest: trees were cracking, dry leaves were crunching, and at that moment Baba-Yaga appeared riding her mortar and sweeping out her traces with a broom.”
The black background gives the palette that the artist uses intense clarity and depth. Red, orange and green tones of tempera paints dominate here. To enhance the scene's dazzling colors, the gold paint adds detail to this already richly developed painting. Gold can be found in the trees, plants, stars in the sky, animals, birds, Baba-Yaga and in her hut.
Gold beading frames the scene on the lid; along the sides the artist has painted an intricate design that blooms with gold and aluminum accents.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the scene and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh and the year of 2008.
