Description:

This interesting Palekh box is a creation of Vladimir Bogdanov of Palekh(born in 1956) whose favorite themes to depict are folklore and genre scenes. This talented artist is a participant of various exhibitions since 1985. His works are kept in the Art Fund of Russian Federation.
This box show an episode from the tale of the Humpbacked Little Pony. Here we can see a moment from the beginning of the story, when one of three sons- Ivan caught the magic mare that trampled down wheat on his father's field. This mare promised Ivan to present three foals in exchange for freedom. Later two of these foals turned into the steeds with golden manes while the third one turned into the Humpbacked Little Pony. The old greedy tsar obliged Ivan to fulfill different tasks, and the Humpbacked Little Pony always helped him.The lid shows realization of the last errand: instead of the tsar Ivan dipped himself in three cauldrons of boiling water, boiling milk and ice cold water, and transformed into a very handsome young man!
The palette is based in smooth yellows, greens, blues, reds and browns. Gold and aluminum paints are used to add intricate details that bring out the true beauty of the palette and develop the contours as well. The black background gives a sense of infinite depth to the scene, which is something Palekh artists have been doing in their paintings from the start. This is a classic example of Palekh lacquer miniature painting!
The box is constructed from papier-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid his hinged at top, and the box sits flat. Golden filigree designs covered the edges of the lid and the sides of the box. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh and the year of 2009.
