Description:

This splendid box has been painted by Yuriy Veselik from the village of Palekh. The subject is based on the popular fairy-tale “The Fisherman and the Magic Fish”, written in 1833 by A.S. Pushkin.
The box shows a recognizable scene from this tale. The fisherman's wife has become a Tsaritsa, but it is enough for her again, and she sends her poor husband to ask the magic fish to make her the mistress of all the seas and oceans.
The composition includes thirteen masterfully painted human figures. Each of them has an individual look, with well-defined features and detailed costumes. The details are enhanced with brilliant gold paint.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to complete the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with nice gold ornaments. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Palekh.
