Description: This large box is a creation of Vera Smirnova. Great care was taken to create this work. The animation is amazing and the accompanying decoration is a lovely slice of elegance. This piece exemplifies the Russian lacquer miniature tradition.
The box's lid and each of its sides show recognizable moments from Lewis Carroll's classic tale “Alice in Wonderland”. On the box's lid the artist has painted Alice falling down through the Rabbit's hole and penetrating into the Wonderland, the tea party in the Hatter's house, the Cheshire Cat, and the White Rabbit who is in a great hurry because he must meet with the Duchess.
On the box's front side we can see Alice speaking to the Caterpillar, the Gryphon, and the Mock Turtle while on its rear side the artist has painted the moment when the violent Queen of Hearts orders to chop off the gardeners' heads to her soldiers. The box's left side depicts the tea party in the Hatter's house while its right side shows Alice holding a flamingo that has been used as a mallet in a game of croquet, the Cheshire Cat and the White Rabbit.
The work is painted in Smirnova's recognizable style. The details are thoroughly contoured with bright gold paint. This builds radiance and texture, both at the same time. Gold metal leaf inlay shines through the costumes of Alice and other characters. Gold metal leaf inlay also sparkles through the luxuriant, gold floral ornaments that decorate the box's exterior.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on one of the box's sloped corners. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Palekh.
