Description: This delightful piece of authentic Russian artistry was created by the talented Yevgeniy Dokuchaev from the village of Fedoskino. He graduated from Fedoskino Art School in 1962, and in 1976 from the Moscow Higher Art Industrial College (former Stroganov School). This artist differs from his peers in that he sticks strictly to the traditional Stroganov and Fedoskino styles.
The box features one of Rembrandt's most celebrated Masterpieces- "Danae". It was painted in 1636.
Danae, a beautiful geroine of a Greek myth, a king's daughter, was imprisoned by her father in a tower and doomed for eternal solitude. In this way the king tried to evade the prophesied death from the hand of his own grandson. However, Zeus, attracted by the beauty of Danae, penetrated to her bedroom in the form of Golden Shower.
More than once this piquant scene was chosen by many great artists as a subject for their masterpieces. We may come across the similar scene in the works by Renoire "Nude on Cushions" (1907) or Henri Matisse "Lying Nude" (1924) as well as in works of many other artists.
Historical fact: in 1985 a maniac poured sulphuric acid onto Rembrandt's Danae and made two knife cuts in it in Hermitage Museum (Saint-Petersburg, Russia). The world-famous masterpiece seemed to have been lost for ever. But the strenuous efforts of experienced Hermitage restorerswhich lasted for twelve years allowed to bring the painting back to public.
This piece is truly a work of art, from top to bottom! Here Dokuchaev has combined brilliant skill with oil paints in shading, coloring, texturing, and a gift for realism.
The scene is framed with a gold line. Two parallel gold lines decorate the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The box has two compartments inside. The work is signed by the artist.
