Description: This large, beautiful box has been painted by Uliana Danchenko from the village of Fedoskino. Here she has drawn a recognizable moment from Lewis Carroll's classic tale "Alice in Wonderland". Alice asks her questions to the Caterpillar who smokes the hookah sitting on the big mushroom.
The scene is painted in bright oils over silver metal powder that accentuates colors and creates depth of the composition. Gold paint is used to paint the mushrooms. Gold metal leaf shines through the hookah, the teapot, the Caterpillar's hat; it is also used to detail the carpet and the Caterpillar's costume. Glass beads are glued in the middle of some flowers; they also imitate dew drops rolling down from the leaves. Multicolored shining spangles are spread throughout the composition. The scene is framed with tiny silver metal punch-outs (silver scan pattern).
On the box's sides the artist has drawn the branch of a tree twisted around with flowers using oil paints. In the middle of some flowers orange, white and violet glass beads are glued. On the box's left side the artist has painted the cat lying on the branch of a tree. The box's exterior is covered with light pink lacquer mixed with gold dust while it's interior is traditionally covered with dark red lacquer.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, the title and the year of 2008.
