Well-known Fedoskino Master, Nikolay Aldoshkin, created the splendid portrait of the great Russian poet, Alexander Pushkin.
This portrait was originally painted on canvas in 1827 by Orest Kiprensky (1782-1836); this masterpiece is currently exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery.
Born in Russia, Orest Kiprensky spent most of his career in Italy. During the Romantic period, he was the leading Russian portraitist.
The sides of the box are decorated with silver scan patterns composed of tiny beads and rhombs hand punched from silver metal sheets and then painstakingly affixed by hand to the box!
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has no hinge, and the box rests flat. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, and the year of 1959.
