This colorful box was painted by Boris Shavirin from the village of Fedoskino.
The box shows major charackters from popular fairy-tale "The Snowmaiden", or "Snegurochka". The tale was also adapted into an opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
The scene painted on the box's lid depicts Father Frost and his daughter Snowmaiden in a winter forest.
The palette incorporates blue and white oils as the action takes place in winter, with addition of gold paints to give a feeling of magic and splendor. The artist demonstrates his unsurpassed skill while painting the charackter's festive attires. The effect of festivity is strengthened by the two pieces of mother-of-pear inlaid into the costumes of both character; they shimmers beautifully with dark green color.The branches of trees covered with white fluffy snow, that are also expressively painted!
