Description: This complex multi-figured scene was painted by a famous Fedoskino Master, Marie Wagner.
In this composition we can see the celebration of Easter in a small Russian town in the XIX century. There are many such ancient small towns with a large number of churches in the middle and northern parts of central Russia.
This painting depicts one of the children's pastimes used for Easter -Egg Rolling or Easter slide.
To do this, a groove was built and the children begin to roll eggs.
One of the options is whose egg rolls the furthest - he takes ALL the eggs. The second option was as follows - different prizes were placed at the end of the groove, and whose egg will hit or touch the prize, he takes the prize.
To the left of the scene we can see children doing Egg Rolling, in the middle we can see two noble woman, who went out for a holiday and possibly giving some gifts. To the right in the background, a young guy is playing the harmonica, next to him is his girlfriend. Other residents gathered around this site, mostly young people, and parents may have gone to the cemetery to take care of the graves of their relatives, and later they will join the festivities. In the background we see several very tall white-stone churches, and on the left several wooden houses.
The palette is full of red, white and blue colours. Wagner's style is one that is unique to Fedoskino, and can easily be distinguished from other artists' styles.
Aluminum powder combined with the oil paints gives a luminescent quality to the clothing, the city landscape and to the sky in the background. This is a striking composition from all angles!
Sides of the box are also has the paintings of different birds and ducks.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer while the interior is completed with dark red lacquer. A hinge is fastened to the top of the box. The box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name and village of Fedoskino.
