This box showing winter troyka driving by Santa(or Father Frost in Russia) was painted by a talented Kholui artist Olga Kosterina.
The theme of sledging with the horses is traditional for Russian lacquer miniature art and very popular among the artists from all four schools-Fedoskino, Palekh, Mstera and Kholui.
Here we can see Santa bringing Christmas gifts in the sledge. The scene is painted among the Russian winter landscape. On the background the artist painted the small village and the cathedral near by covered with the snow. The horse in the middle has the three bells over her head painted in gold.
Blue and red tones are dominated on this scene. Gold paints are used to detail the sledge, the steeds and the domes of the church. The front picturesque of the scene is in the motion. Beautifully painted white horses with slender legs are like flying; the flakes of snow are whirling and curling everywhere.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Intricate gold pattern decorates the sides of the box. The interior of the box is red, while the exterior bottom are covered with back lacquer. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on wavy platform.
The work is signed with the artist's name, the village of Kholui and the title ("Oh, you Winter!").
