Well-known artist Boris Kiriyanov of Kholui is a talent behind this interesting dual-sided box. On one of the sides of the box the artist has depicted a panoramic view of town of Suzdal and the other one- a view of the village of Dunilovo, which located not far from Ivanovo and Shuya.
Suzdal is one of the oldest towns in north-east Russia. It was the Capital of the Rostov-Suzdal Principality in the 11th Century. Town of Suzdal is located approximately 200 km from Moscow on the banks of the River Kamenka . The view of the Bell-towers and Domes of Churches share a tree-lined panorama with vistas of the horizon stretching as far as the eye can see. Suzdal is a very old, legendary town with a fairy-tale charm. The white stone walls of its Kremlin and Monasteries own a majestic beauty, its Church domes and Belfries soar into the sky, and its neat wooden houses are decorated with exquisite carved patterns!
Centuries have passed without marring the beauty of olden Suzdal with modern architecture. The architectural aspect of the town, which has taken shape over the course of Centuries has perpetuated in stone, the history of Suzdal, which is closely linked with the history of the old Russia and its rich culture. The remarkable heritage of Suzdal has turned this small town into an inimitable open-air museum. The town is rightly regarded as a gem of Russian national culture. Indeed, it contains about 100 monuments of secular and Church architecture. On the other side of the box we can see a village of Dunilovo. In a village of Dunilovo a Holy Assumption nunnery is located, where the disgraced wife of Peter the First Evdokia Lopuchina was imprisoned. Also Dunilovo is known for it's 11 Churches! This village is located in the banks of the river Teza in Ivanovo region. On the opposite side of the river there is another village called Goritsy.
The palette of the box is traditional for Kholui style of painting and for depicted by author Summer time.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. Gold ornamentation frames the compositions on the lids. The box has a hinge at the bottom of the compositions and rests flat. It is signed with the artist's name, village of Kholui and titles on both of the sides.
