Well-known prominent Kholui artist, Kovaleova Svetlana, has painted this complex multi-figured composition that depicts the gathering of characters from Lewis Carroll's classic tale "Alice in Wonderland".
It is amazing how the artist could find place for so many figures both animal and human. Each of them is an easy recognizable character from the tale. Here we can see Alice, the Hatter, the Hare, the Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Mouse, the Fish, the Flamingo, the Caterpillar and certainly the Queen accompanied by her soldiers at the background.
The scene is painted over the mother-of-pearl. This large piece of mother-of-pearl is a plate of several pressed pieces of mother-of-pearl glued to the surface of the lid of the box.
Each minute detail is enhanced with brilliant gold paint.
Gold and silver paints are also used to decorate the box's sides with intricate floral pattern.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on the four small round legs.
At the bottom of the box outside the artist has signed her name, title and the name of the school- Kholui.
