Description:

This box was painted by a talented Palekh artist Gelisheva Ludmila and shows the scenes from the Russian folk fairy-tale "Father Frost" or "Morozko".
It tells about a little girl who was sent to the forest on a very cold night by her cruel stepmother. The stepmother intends to kill the girl because she is more beautiful and hardworking than her own daughter. The end of the tale is happy; the girl is rewarded while her stepmother and stepsister are punished.
The center of the composition shows Father Frost and a Girl, who is freezing in the forest. Not long ago her Father has left her in the forest to die from cold by the order of his cruel wife. The moment of riding is shown on the left side of the box. Then her Father has changed his mind, and decided to return to the forest and bring his daughter home. When he found the place where he left her, he couldn't believe his eyes! His daughter was alive and dressed in rich, warm clothes and has a casket full of treasures given her by father Frost...
On the right side of the painting we can see cruel stepmother, who stayed in front of casket with treasures, that Father Frost gave to a girl...
The scene is painted in the traditional Palekh style. The details are enhanced with gold and aluminum paints. Gold paint is used to paint the attractive patterns that frames the box's lid, and wraps around the bottom part of the box's body. The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged to the top of the painting, and the box rests flat. The work is signed with the artist name, Palekh and date 2014.
