This handcrafted box was painted by established Palekh artist, Gunina Galina. The scene exudes her professionalism and the coloration invites the eye for permanent residence through appreciation!
The box shows a scene from the popular fairy-tale "The Snowmaiden", or "Snegurochka". The tale was also adapted into an opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
In the center we can see the Snowmaiden sit on a bench in front of Spinner. Lel is next to her is playing on a flute. To the left to village girls are looking at them and lisen to a song Lel's Song. On the background we can Kingdom of Berendey.
The scene is painted in the icon painting style, which has been passed on from generation to the next and used in painting beautiful scenes like this. The details are executed with precise brushwork. Shining gold and silver paints applied with a very thin brush fill the scene with a magic splendor.
Gold and aluminum is also used to decorate the box's exterior with beautiful patterns.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests flat. The work is not signed.
