Description: This interesting five-sided casket has been painted by a talented artist Yuliya Konovalova from the village of Palekh.
The subject of the composition is based on the popular Russian folk tale "Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf". The tale tells about the adventures of the Prince Ivan Tsarevich and his companion the Grey Wolf, a magician. After the wolf ate Ivan's horse, they became partners in crime. The wolf felt sorry for Ivan, and he helped him in his quest to get Elena to be his bride. The Gray Wolf even helps Ivan when his brothers murder him and throw his remains in a bucket, out to sea. When the wolf gets the waters of life and death, Ivan is able to be alive again and go back to avenge his brothers. It is only then that Elena is able to marry the man she truly loves. Who knows if this would have happened if the Gray Wolf would not have been hungry the day Ivan's horse crossed its path.
The scene depicted on the lid shows the final of the story, when Ivan Tsarevich riding the Grey Wolf with Elena the Beautiful and holding the Fire Bird's cage in his hands. The sides of a casket are showing different scenes from this fairy tale-Wolf is on a way to eat a horse of Ivan Tsarevich, Ivan Tsarevich is catching a Fire-Bird, the Wolf is stealing Elena the Beautiful from the confinemant.
A broad spectrum of colors is used to create this highly detailed casket. The artist used the black backbackground, which is one of Palekh's stylistic trademarks.
Gold paint and aluminum paints are used to enhance the life and brightness of the scene. The costumes of the characters are also decorated with gold and aluminum paints.
The box rests on two platforms, that comes from the sides. The edges of the lid and it's sides are decorated with a gold ornamentation.
The box is made out of paper-mache made. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged and the box is signed with the artist's name and the village of Palekh on a lid.
