Description: This interesting dual-sided box was painted by well-known Palekh artist Smirnova Nataliya.
On the both of the sides of the box the artist has chosen to depict an episodes from the turbulent story entitled, "Snowmaiden".
On one of them we can see Snowmaiden and Lel, who is giving Snowmaiden a flower, while Spring and Father Frost are watching for them from the trees.
On the other side of the box we can see Lel playing on a flute, Mizgir and Snowmaiden.
The artist makes typical for Palekh choices of colors :white, green, blue, and red. Throughout the scene each color has its own balanced place that creates a strong visual aesthetic. The artist has been also able to balance the composition by placing elements of nature, like trees and hills. The detail is added with gold paint, which defines the movement in the clothing, the contours, and the decoration on the characters' clothing. It is also used to detail the landscape, but only for added highlight.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. Gold ornamentation frames the compositions on the lids. The box has a hinge at the bottom of the compositions and rests flat. It is signed with the artist's name, village and year (2011) and title on both of the sides.
