Description:

This small five-sided casket was painted by a talented Palekh artist Kornilova Nataliya.
It's lid and the sides are covered with colorful paintings based on the Russian folk fairy-tale "Father Frost" or "Morozko".
The story tells about a little girl who was sent to the forest on a bitterly cold night by her cruel stepmother. The stepmother intends to kill the girl because she is more beautiful and hardworking than her own daughter. The end of the tale is happy; the girl is rewarded while her stepmother and stepsister were punished.
On the box's lid and the sides we can see several scenes. The front side depicts Morozko and a young girl. Not long ago the father of a girl has left her in the forest to die from cold by the order of his cruel wife. This is what we can see in the foreground. Then he changed his mind, and decided to return to the forest and bring his daughter home. When he found the place where he left her, he couldn't believe his eyes! His daughter was alive and dressed in rich, warm clothes and a chest with treasures was near her... He picked daughter up, took a chest full of treasures and they happily drove the sledge back to the village. And this moment can be seen in the upper right corner of the composition.
The lid and the back side are showing happy return of a girl in a sledge with a treasure chest. The right side showing a girl and her father going to a forest in the beggining. And the left side showing stepmother with one of her daughters looking at the girl and her treasure chect...
The scenes are painted in the traditional Palekh style. The details are enhanced with gold and aluminum paints. The lid is framed with a golden dot ornament. Gold and aluminum paints are used to paint the attractive patterns that wraps around the box's sides.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged, and the box sits on two platforms. The work is signed by the artist with her name and the village of Palekh.
