Description: This high quality icon was painted by a well-known Palekh artist, Elena Yakovets (Smirnova in maiden).
The icon of the Mother of God, called "Assuage my sorrows", became famous in Moscow for many miracles since the second half of the XVIII century, and especially during the plague in 1771. The icon was brought to Moscow by Cossacks in 1640 during the reign of Mikhail Feodorovich (1613-1645) and placed in the church of St. Nicholas on Pupysh in the Gardeners(Moscow). At one time, probably due to a fire and repeated reconstructions of the temple, the icon was forgotten, it was abandoned and was in great neglect on the bell tower.
But the abundant mercies shown through her by the Mother of God made her remember the forgotten shrine and give her a proper place in the temple, in which a chapel was later built in her honor. The celebration of the miraculous icon, performed annually on January 25, was established in 1760 in memory of the healing of a sick woman who was honored with a vision of this holy image and was healed after a prayer service in front of him on January 25 in the church of St. Nicholas on Pupyshy in Moscow. The services compiled by her and the akathist belong to the same time. Venerated lists from the icon of the Mother of God, called "Quench my Sorrows", are found in many Churches in Moscow and other cities.
The icon is painted on the wooden base.
