Description:

This gorgeous box by R. Buchinsky of Fedoskino depicts the clarity and beauty of a winter day. The scene depicts a frozen, icy river and the surrounding landscape, including a forest and the edge of a small village. The landscape is lyrical and romantic. Snow-covered trees, with delicate lace-like branches, rolling hills covered with thick snow, and several buildings create a harmonious image. The scene is painted mostly in white and grey-greenish tones, which in the best way possible can help to reproduce the atmosphere of a winter day. The palette is soft and cool, and you can almost feel the chilly air. The artist does a nice job creating the look of snow on the trees, and sunlight falling on the icy river. Mother-of-pearl inlay in the river creates the perfect icy effect and reproduces a blinding golden light reflected on the ice. The snow is softly piled up on the leaves of the trees in the foreground, and creates the ghostly outline of branches on some of the trees in the distance as well. The large tree in the center draws the viewer's attention first. By layering paint and clear lacquer over the inlay of oil paints, and then again repeating this procedure, the artist creates a three-dimensional effect that provides great depth and truth to the tree's form. The network of branches, some of which are very thin and delicate, creates a lace-like appearance. The little trees and plants in the foreground are nicely detailed, with carefully painted stems, delicate dried blossoms and tiny leaves. One cannot possibly understand and realize the beauty of this piece unless it is resting in the palm of your hand.
The sides of the box and its base are covered with grey-greenish lacquer with dark grey spots on it. This blending of dark and light grey tones resemble the texture of grey marble. Grey tones of the composition go well with the stone design of the same color on the base and the sides of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four round legs. It is signed with the artist's name, village, and year (2003). Breathtaking landscape!
